Go GREEN - drink Virginia wine!

You'll reduce your carbon footprint ... by buying award-winning local wines instead of purchasing a bottle that has to be put on a plane in Australia and flown here for you.

You'll help protect a gorgeous local farm .... vineyards are one of the few remaining pieces of property not being sold off to the condo developer guy.

Many of Virginia's mom & pop wineries are small farms where the vintner personally, passionately nurtures and handcrafts wines in very small batches. These artisan wines are making headlines these days ... and they are winning big in international competitions. The only place you'll find many of these wines is at the Tasting Room or at a fest. Our Upcoming Events calendar will keep you in the know on all the latest winery events.

Save gas by letting the wineries come to you at the fest. Here are four events where you can try wines from all over the state in one little spot:

  • JUNE - Vintage Virginia is one of the oldest and biggest wine festivals in the state. It happens every Spring at Bull Run Park in Northern Virginia, and typically has 55-60 wineries who come from around the state to participate. This festival is hosted by the Virginia Wineries Association and always has a great line-up of food, music and of course WINE. www.vintagevirginia.com
  • AUGUST - Virginia Wine Showcase is Virginia's  indoor festival for those who prefer to experience wine in a climate controlled, hayfever and hurricane-free venue. The Showcase, featuring air-conditioning in August, highlights many of Virginia's wineries plus Fancy Foods and gourmet vendors who don't often venture outside (because their stuff melts). You'll get to meet all of the regions best winemakers, chocolatiers, cheesemakers, fresh herb purveyors and makers of local (go green) gourmet products at this show, hosted by the Farm Wineries Council. www.vawineshowcase.org
  • SEPTEMBER - Mount Vernon Sunset Wine Festival is your chance to taste Virginia wine at George's house! Mount Vernon Estate opens it grounds twice a year - Spring and Fall - to show off Virginia's new vintages. This is a smaller show, and a nice venue to meet winemakers and enjoy a picnic on the river. www.mountvernon.org
  • SEPTEMBER - Virginia Wine Festival is the oldest festival in the state (actually, it's the oldest wine festival on the east coast!!) This fest was started 33 years ago by the Vinifera Wine Growers Association when there were only three wineries in Virginia! Today it is definitely THE BIG ONE - so many wineries and people come out to this fest that it tends to outgrow every venue it goes to. This festival is the kick off event for Virginia Wine Month each year at the end of September.  www.virginiawinefestival.org

So Many Wineries ... So Little Time

Just when you thought you had been to them all wineries start popping up all over the state of Virginia. Virginia Wine Groupees are going to love this year's crop of new Tasting Rooms in the state.

Several brand spankin' swanky new wineries have opened in the past few weeks - Barrel Oak Winery, just out I-66, Cross Keys Winery, just off I-81, and New Kent Winery between Richmond & Williamsburg. You've got to go check these hotspots out - they are gorgeous facilities that will become favorite tasting points in Virginia Wine Country.

Click on the A to Z button from the navigation bar on the left of this page to find the most up-to-date list of all the Virginia wineries. We'll try to keep up with new wineries getting ready to open on our A to Z page.
